Trataka cures eye diseases and improves eye sight, prevents sloth and manifests 'inward light'. By its constant practice, clairvoyance (divya dristi) is developed and sambhavi mudra, a higher spiritual gesture, is verily achieved.
CLEANSING YOGIC TECHNIQUE
Trataka comes from the Sanskrit word, "to gaze steadily". Trataka has been used in many mystical paths, and in yoga it is a deep practice of stilling the senses and the mind. Trataka can be used on many objects but the best object to prepare the mind slowly to focus inward, is the candle flame. Trataka is one of the Shatkarmas - Cleansing Techniques in Hatha Yoga. Practicing Trataka before starting your personal Sadhana greatly deepens your practice.
INTERNAL TRATAKA & EXTRERNAL TRATAKA
There are two forms of Trataka Practice, the first is observing the outer object (bahiranga), with awareness and detachment. Observation without movement on a chosen object. This allows perception to widen, as well as focusing the senses on one aim.
The second form of Trataka is observation on an object with the eyes closed (antaranga). This form of concentration enables the deepening of vision and concentration. Holding a picture, may it be the flame, moon, or sun, and seeing it as full and clear as possible. Without stressing and without ambition.
BENEFITS OF PRACTING TRATAKA
The benefits of practicing Trataka can be felt immediately. When the eyes set on one point, this effect the mind, and breath. The retina and brain are really connected, and we can see that when we get nerves, our eyes start to flicker and flutter. Almost half of our brain is dedicated to site and vision and once we focus our vision on one point we can bring about Pratyahara, and allowing for ONE-POINTED CONCENTRATION. When practicing Trataka on a candle flame, you can find the warm flame soothing to the eyes. Trataka is very beneficial for insomnia, and can possibly improve depression. When practicing Trataka the focus puts pressure on the Pineal gland, this stimulates the third eye; opening to inner vision, memory and wisdom.
PRACTICING TRATAKA ON A FLAME
Preparation of the candle is important:
Set the candle a few centimeters from the wall, the wall should be white. Candle can be white or orange in color, best is natural bees wax.
Set the candle so that the candle is at eyes level (it is different for everyone). The distance between the candle and you should be arms distance apart.
Prepare the body in such a way that you will be comfortable, Sukasana is ideal, if sitting on the floor is not possible then sit in a chair. Placing the palms on the thighs, and placing a blanket under the feet, to keep the cold at bay.
*** It is important not to strain, if you feel you need to close the eyes do so, and open them once you feel ready to look at the candle.
Epileptics should not practise trataka on a candle flame
